The Green Card number for the U.S. issued each year is limited by law and is also based on immigrant demand. An analysis of applicants’ home countries allows us to determine which countries receive the most Green Card to live in the USA.
The United States is a country that attracts people from all over the world and offers diverse opportunities for those who want to live there permanently. Each year, thousands of people apply for a Green Card to become permanent residents of the United States. And in this way, live in the country and enjoy all the rights and benefits it entails.
The Green Card may be obtained through family, employment or as an investor. The process lasts for a few years and once it is obtained, restrictions on how long it can remain decrease.
The number of Green Cards issued annually is not published by the U.S. government, but data is available showing which countries most people apply for. Let’s see which countries send the most green card applications each year:
The countries that most apply for Green Cards
The United States extends two types of permanent residence cards: the green card and the employment authorization document (EAD). An EAD allows an immigrant with a valid temporary visa to work legally in the U.S., while the Green Card allows them to qualify for citizenship five years after they receive it.
In addition, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) issues permanent residency cards to immigrants who have been approved to live in the country. The number of cards issued each year lets you know which countries send the most immigrants to the United States, as well as how many people move from their home country forever.
The number of Green Cards issued per year is based on a formula that takes into account the number of visas issued in previous years and the estimate of the accrual of people waiting for visas.
The top five countries that have received U.S. permanent residence cards in recent years are:
- Mexico 20% (of all residence cards issued worldwide)
- China 12%
- India 7%
- Philippines 4%
- Vietnam 4%
These five countries account for about 50% of all applications.
How to get the Green Card per investment
The first step in applying for an EB-5 visa is to locate a project with the requirements set out in the program. The average time to complete the Green Card is 2 years. Although this period may be reduced if it is a project of national interest or located in a rural area
The investor must then submit an application through an attorney to enter the program by completing Form I-526. In this step, the interested party must transparently disclose the origin of the capital to be used. For which you must have a source and path of legal funds. After that, you must submit to a U.S. Embassy a second document known as Form DS-260, which will grant residence in the country for 2 years.
Once this period has elapsed, the investor is already able to change his immigration status from “nonimmigrant” to “permanent resident”. Procedure that is recommended to be carried out through an attorney. However, it can also be done by a natural person.
